On Sunday Ben's Grandpa (Gary Bollier) completed the 1079 mile motorcycle ride "Cruising For The Cure" from Illinois through Iowa to Kansas City, MO and
back through Springfield, IL into Chicago. It took him 19 hours.

The Ferguson's are spending almost 3 weeks in New Hampshire visiting Paul's family.

They are having a great time and enjoying the peaceful and beautiful Lake Wentworth.

Fighting haemophilus influenzae

Ben has been fighting some seasonal allergies and he started coughing with it, which is a sign of a lung infection. The doctors put him on Omnicef for 2 weeks to hopefully take the cough away. It wasnt doing anything and Ben wasn't feeling well. So they added another 2 weeks.

Then Ben had an appointment with the CF Team. At his appt. he cultured haemophilus influenzae even though being on Omnicef. Which is not good.

So they added Rampfin (a very strong antibiotic) to the Omnicef for another 2 weeks.

That seemed to kill the bacteria in his lungs.

He still was struggling with allergy symptoms so the doctors have put Ben on a steriod nasal spray. The nose spray has taken away his allergy symptoms!

Now Ben seems to be healthy. He still has a little bit of a cough but the doctors think its due to post-nasal drip from allergies.

It has been a long 2 months but we think we have gotten past this sickness!

We are so thankful for God's grace and peace He has given us through this time.

Its never fun to go through a time of sickness and

He has answered our prayers to take away this sickness from Ben.

Ben received a few dinosaur books on his birthday and all he wanted to do was read them.

Cough

Ben caught a cold about 3 weeks ago and couldn't get over it so he went on an antibiotic for 2 weeks. That ended this past weekend but his cough has not. So Dr. McColley has Ben on another 2 weeks of antibiotics. Its hard having him on an antibiotic for a whole month. Please pray for Ben to get back to his baseline of no coughing. Please also pray against progression of the disease in his lungs. Thank you for your prayers.

A Good Clinic Visit

Ben had his routine CF clinic at Children's Memorials office in Westchester, IL.

He is doing really well and hasn't had an exacerbation since July 29th!

He has been doing a lot of growing this winter. In the past 2.5 months, Ben grew 1 inch.

Ben needs to keep working on getting high calorie, high fat meals to keep up with his growing.

His weight was fine but is not increasing at the same rate as his height, so his BMI went down. It is a little above 50% so they want to keep a close eye on his weight.

Please pray that Ben will start taking more ownership of his eating and would have a good appetite. It is a burden on Michelle and Paul to make sure he is getting enough to eat.

Ben came down with a fever last week which only lasted 24 hrs. Praise the Lord!

Then a couple days later he caught Caleb's cold.

He was heading down the route of needing antibiotics. . .

Paul and Michelle increased airway clearance and

prayed for him to get over this on his own.

And for the first time since Ben has been diagnosed, he got over the cough/cold without it causing an exacerbation. This is huge for the Ferguson!

Our faith and trust in our Heavenly Father is growing and growing.

Since Ben cultured Psuedomonas at the end of July, he has been very healthy. He was on TOBI for the month of August and October which seemed to clean him out. He has been doing so well. We thank the LORD!

Allergies

Michelle talked with Ben's Doctor early this week and the Doctor thinks Ben's symptoms are from allergies and not an infection at this point. He is still congested with sneezing and some coughing. They started him on Kid's Claritin and that seems to be helping. Ben will start TOBI this coming Wednesday, so if there is anything deep in his lungs, the TOBI should take care of it. Please pray for strength and patience for Ben and Paul & Michelle as they start TOBI. It is difficult to add the twice a day treatment on top of his other therapy and nebs.

Thank you for your prayers. Ben is such a sweet boy! He is always full of questions, very mischievous, loves to be with Ty and Ben, and is so into dinosaurs. We thank the Lord for making Ben "fearfully and wonderfully made". "My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:15-16

We thank the Lord for being a big and powerful God who loves Ben more than we can fathom.

Ben has had an increase of cough the past couple days which is an indication that he may have another lung infection. He is not due to go back on TOBI for another 2 weeks, so we are really hoping that Ben doesn't have to go on another antibiotic right now. Please pray for health in Ben's lungs. We trust in the one true God who is able to do all things. We ask of Him to do a mighty work in Ben's body and to give Ben complete health.

New House and Bad News

They are really enjoying their new home.
Their address is 0N556 Herrick Drive Wheaton, IL 60187.

It has been an intense 2 weeks for the Fergusons. They arrived home from New Hampshire with one week to pack up their house. Then they closed on both homes on the same day which was crazy to say the least. The day they were moving, they received a call saying Ben had cultured Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This is the "bad" bacteria in the CF world due to being the most common cause of lung infections. Eventually it may colonize in Ben's lungs and be responsible for damage to lung tissue as the disease progresses. There was a drug created in 1997 called TOBI, the first aerosolized antibiotic designed for CF, that is a great weapon against Pseudomonas. Ben has been on TOBI for the past 2 weeks and will continue for another 2 weeks. On top of Ben's regular chest therapy and pulmonzyme, TOBI is a twice a day inhaled antibiotic that takes about 20 min each time. Its hard for a 3 year old to sit with stuff strapped to his face and body for 45 mins twice a day. . . everyday. So far Ben has been responding positively to TOBI and his symptoms are improving. So the plan is for Ben to be off TOBI for a month then back on for another month. If his symptoms worsen then he may have to be admitted to Children's Memorial Hospital for IV antibiotics.

Please pray for Ben to be rid of all Pseudomonas in his lungs and that God would protect him from it in the future. Thank you for your prayer support of Ben and our family! We are very grateful!

Summer vacation to NH!

The whole family had such a fun time in visiting Poppie and Lannie in New Hampshire. They spend two weeks fishing, playing with cousins Cole/Olive/Asher/Claire/Siena, riding in Poppie's boat, going to StoryLand Amusement Park, and going to town for Bailey's Bubble ice cream cone with sprinkles! Ben had to go on a two week round of antibiotics while NH but that didn't slow him down. He managed to get stung multiple time by bees causing his lip to swell and fell out of the boat head first while fishing. He is just curious enough to find trouble wherever he goes. God is good and Ben is full of life, laughter and mischief!

During the week of Fourth of July, Ben was busy playing with his cousins, being enthralled by the dinosaurs at Brookfield Zoo, going to the Wheaton parade, and soaking up the sun at the nearby pool. Ben's health has been doing great this summer and he has been very energetic and full of life during every activity he is involved in.

The One Year Mark

A year has gone by since Ben has been diagnosed and God continues to prove his faithfulness! Paul and Michelle sold their house a couple of weeks ago and have been on the hunt for the perfect location, setting, and opportunity for another home where they will share new memories! Of course Michelle did extensive research and found the PERFECT place! It is located 5 minutes from the Academy, is on a half acre of land, has four bedrooms, and cries out "Fergusons!" Paul and Michelle placed a bid on the house and unfortunately were runner-ups. It was sad because their hearts were set on this new house. Then, on Ben's anniversary of his diagnosis - the relator called back and told Paul and Michelle that the family before them declined and they got the house!

And we wonder if God has Ben's life in his hand. And we wonder if God is in control. Hmm...it's been proven. God is near. God is good. God is in control!

We thank him for what he has done, for what he is doing, and for what he is going to do in Ben's life - for his glory!

Colorado Trip!

The Ferguson family went on a trip to Colorado with Wheaton Academy and had such a great time! They spent 5 days at Deer Valley Ranch near Buena Vista, CO. The boys loved the horses and we spend a lot of time at the corral. The cowboys were incredible with the boys. Ty, Ben and Caleb borrowed some cowboy boots during our stay and they never took them off. Ben also got a hat which he proudly wore everywhere.

May 8th Ben had his routine CF clinic visit with Dr. McColley and NP Stacey Vanderbranden. We are really blessed by the medical care that Ben is receiving. Overall, Ben is doing well! His lungs sound good, his BMI is 66%, and he has grown an inch in the past 3 month. Dr. McColley encouraged Michelle and Paul again to do vest treatments and nebulizer twice a day. Since Ben was a later diagnoses and the x-rays in the hospital this summer showed some potential lung damage, he is at a higher risk for future progression. It was a good reminder. Michelle and Paul also talked with the doctors about summer nutrition for Ben. He needs extra salt in the summer as he loses a lot through his sweat. This will also make Ben more prone to dehydration so increasing liquid is vital. We are really hoping he has a good healthy summer!

Ben's brother, Tymon, got a cold and passed it around to the family! Ben came down with it this past Saturday. Paul and Michelle tried to help him kick the virus with increased treatments, but he it wasn't working. On Wednesday he was put on a two week oral antibiotic. Please pray for Ben's family to maintain health after Ben's course of antibiotic. It would be a blessing for Ben to not get sick especially with the weather getting nicer!

VX-809

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announced last week that they are beginning phase two trial for VX-809. This drug has a potential to treat the basic defect in cystic fibrosis - a gene and its protein product, called CFTR.

Here is apart of the article that is on the CF website:

"CF treatment involves the use of multiple drugs that address the symptoms of CF, however no therapy currently exists that targets the underlying cause of this disease,” said Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., president and CEO of the CF Foundation. “VX-809, which today entered Phase 2 clinical development, may have the potential to play a significant role in changing the future course of this disease for people with CF.”

"The advancement of VX-809 into Phase 2 development demonstrates our commitment to improve care for patients with CF," said Freda Lewis-Hall, M.D., executive vice president, medicines development, and chief medical officer of Vertex. "This Phase 2a trial is designed primarily to provide a safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic evaluation for VX-809. Any additional signals observed in this trial, including changes in sweat chloride and nasal potential difference, that indicate VX-809 has an effect on measures of CFTR function may be highly informative and encouraging for planning future clinical trials with VX-809."

WHAT A BIG GOD we trust!!!!! Again we are reminded that Ben's every breath is in good hands! This is exciting news about the advancements in medical technology. We can only pray that God will use this medication for his glory to heal cystic fibrosis patients, like Ben!

YES LORD ... We believe that you are able to do this for Ben! May a cure be found in Ben's lifetime! This is our prayer! According to our faith we will see it be done! FAITH!

Water Park!

The whole family was given a gift to stay at Key Lime Cove Water Park in Gurnee, IL for a fun trip for the kids! They adventured to the park this past week during Paul's spring break. The boys were so excited to go! They had a fun time playing in the water, going down the slides, and having a "sleepover" in the hotel room. The pictures taken under the hot diggety dawg sign was dedicated to Caleb because that is his nickname!

Overall, Ben is doing great! He is staying healthy and having fun with his brothers!

We had a great time celebrating Ben's 3rd Birthday at Wheaton Academy's gym this past weekend (his official birthday is on March 17, St. Patrick's day). A few of Ben's friends came to play games, run around, and eat cupcakes together. It was a fun time and we are so blessed by Ben's life!

Children's Memorial Visit

Last week Michelle, Paul, and Ben went to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago for Ben's routine CF clinic visit. The medical team tried to complete a Lung Function Test to see if Ben's lung capacity has reactive airways. Ben was too young to sit through the test so there were no accurate readings. Therefore, the test will have to be performed at an older age, but overall it was a positive experience to allow Ben to witness what he will have to do in the future. Next, Paul and Michelle met with Dr. McColley and the Nurse Practitioner, Stacey VanderBranden. They learned alot from them were grateful for their insight.

The big news was that Ben's BMI is up to 77%. He gained a ton of weight over the past 2 months. It is such a blessing to be over our goal of BMI at 50%. In 8 months Ben has gone from the 5% to the 77%!!! Praise the Lord for His goodness and the gift of enzymes.

After the visit Paul and Michelle took Ben to see the Prayer Chapel that Paul and Ben went to every morning during this past summer. Ben was so excited to see it and said a prayer of thanks for God's grace and blessings. When they went to the Courtyard Ben let out a squeal of delight and said, "I love this place." During the two week stay at Children's during the summer, Ben spent a lot of time in the courtyard running around because he could not go anywhere else.

We are very grateful for God's faithful and goodness. Ben came in to Children's Memorial Hospital as a very sick boy and left healthy and growing!

Grandpa and Grandma Ferguson (Poppy and Lannie) were in town last week and Ty, Ben, and Caleb were so excited! They had so much fun with them. The whole family traveled to downtown Chicago to see Missy and Hakeem (Paul's sister and brother-in-law), their cousin Zion, and new baby Selah.

Since Ben's last round of antibiotic, he has been doing so well! He is healthy, energetic and playing constantly with Ty.

We are so grateful for his health and pray it will continue through the end of winter.

Two important things:

2. Yesterday Ben was prescribed a powerful antibiotic, Amoxicillin. He was shown signs of either a sinus infection or a bacteria infection in his lungs. He will be visiting the CF clinic tomorrow so they can obtain a culture to detect any possible bacteria growing in his lungs.

Michelle has noticed for the past month that he was been more lethargic, not eating as well, and has a persistent cough.

Please pray that the tests comes back negative!!

We know Ben's life is in God's hands and we trust Him through every step!

Ben and Ty like to drive their cars along the wall.

Ben loves to dump all the cars onto the couch and line them up.

Michelle and Paul have been debating if Ben needed to go on an antibiotic this week. He has been doing pretty well but not his best. The main symptoms were more irritable, less energy, coughing more, and harder to get him to eat. Then Saturday night he woke up coughing around midnight and Michelle went to the Pharmacy around 12:30am to get Ben some antibiotics. Sleepless night are never fun, but the antibiotic seems to be effective. He is still not to his baseline but already Ben has more energy and is sleeping more soundly. Please pray for wisdom for Paul and Michelle to know the when and when not to give Ben antibiotics. They don't want to be too aggressive and give him antibiotics too much because of the risk of them becoming ineffective. However, we want to make sure we prevent an exacerbation as it could lead to lung damage.

Ty and Ben love to play with their cars. They play with them everyday and for hours. Ben can't handle it if the cars aren't near him at all times. Ben has a bucket that he faithfully carries with him around the house.

Getting Too Big!

Ben had his routine CF clinic visit earlier this week. Michelle and Ben met with Dr. Chung and the rest of the CF team. According to the doctors Ben is looking good. His lungs continue to sound clear and he is still gaining weight. He gained a pound and a half and grew a little over an inch since Nov 21st. It's hard for Michelle to keep up with his clothing sizes! He is about to transition into his 3rd pants size in 6 months. Crazy! Ben's BMI (body mass index) lowered a little because his height increased more than his weight. So Michelle and Paul are continuing to work on his diet so he can gain weight and to get his BMI above 50%. Ben also took a throat culture for a screening process and the results will come back in a week.

Within the next week Ben's official website (not just a blog) will be launched. Looking back on all the pictures of when Ben was in the hospital will blow anyone away! Within seven months of Ben's toddler years he looks like a completely different child! It's amazing what the right medicines and treatments can do for his health.

Deuteronomy 32: 3-4 - I will proclaim the name of the Lord. oh, praise the greatness of our God!

Looking back on 2008, we clearly see God has taken us through a year we will never forget. Especially for Ben! In June Ben was faced with a diagnosis that changed his life, and for the past 6 months of the year we have been adjusting to a new life style.

For the past month Ben has been exceeding all expectations. He is gaining weight, staying health (for the most part), and living an active, normal 2 year old life. Ben has continued to do treatments twice a day. He is also currently getting over a cold which was a concern for awhile. We are grateful his cold has not got worse, especially since so many viruses are going around at this time of the year. But thankfully Ben has not had to go back on antibiotics due to the decline in his cold symptoms.

Also, looking back on 2008, we clearly see the hand of God on Ben's life. God has continued to strengthen our lives, our faith, and our hope for the future!

Philippians 3:14 - Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

And for YOU! Thanks you for being interested in Ben's life. Thank you for being a prayer partner and helping Michelle and Paul carry the burden. Thank you for investing your time to be a part of Ben's life.

And now as we look forward to the year 2009, we strain toward what is ahead; we press on toward the goal and to look heavenly bound. Our eyes are on the Lord for the year 2009, therefore we know Ben's life is in good hands!

Cutting down the Ferguson Christmas tree was a fun adventure. The boys just wanted to chop trees down. They weren't really into my desire to find the perfect family tree like Michelle. Paul started his basketball season so the whole family has spend many hours in the Wheaton Academy gym. Ty, Ben and Caleb love it and can't get enough! Also, recently Michelle rented the movie Kung Fu Panda and it's the new obsession in the house. Everyone now karate chops each other, Caleb included.

Ben is doing well. His throat culture came back normal which is another answer to prayer. Please continue to pray for Ben's health this winter.

Exodus 15:2-3 - The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.

He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.

Good news for which we are thankful!

Ben had a CF clinic visit this week. He has grown more and his BMI had increased from 30% to 42%. He has almost reached his goal of 50%. Also, his lungs sounded clear which is a praise! He has had a couple of colds over the previous 2 weeks, so Dr. Prestridge put Ben on a 3 week oral antibiotic. Patients with CF always have a some amount of bacteria in their lungs (non-CF people would not have any) so when Ben gets a virus/cold the bacteria levels in his lungs increase. So even if he doesn't have a lung infection, Dr. Prestridge wants to make sure the bacteria growth in his lungs is contained.

Michelle and Paul talked with Dr. Prestridge about getting a lung function test for Ben. They only can do toddler testing at Children's Memorial in Chicago which is called an IOS (impulse spirometor). There are plans being made to do this test in January. It will give us a guideline on how Ben's lungs are doing as well as help us track his the health of his lungs as we move forward. Also, because of Ben's excellent growth over the past 2 months, the doctor increased his enzymes to 3 for a snack and 4 for meals.

Ben is doing really well. He is coorporating well with his treatments, enzymes, and medicine right now. He is very active and plays non-stop with Ty. They are best friends and it is such a blessing to watch. Caleb tries to be involved but can't keep up with the older boys, even though he wants to! One of their favorite activities is to go to the Wheaton Academy's gym. The boys absolutely love to go see their Dad and run around the gym.

Thank you for your prayers. The prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective. We continue to feel your prayers in our life.

Psalm 18: 30-32 - As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless.

Yay! The first annual Cruisin' for The Cure was a success! The total amount raised is not yet finished being counted, but for the first annual event we are very thankful for the support! About 50-75 people attending the event as we ate lots of food, tried on our new sweet T-shirts, raffles with great gifts, and listened to Ben's story! We are excited to see where Cruisin' For The Cure will go in the future as we hope to expand our awareness and get more and more people involved.

Ben's fingers are healing from his little accident! The doctors are thinking that he will not need skin grafts anymore ... we're hoping and praying the status stays that way!

Health Update

Last week Ben visited the dentist. His teeth are healthy and he has no cavities. This is good news because CF patients tend to have more problems with their teeth.

Also, two weeks ago Ben got his fingers caught in the treadmill and he went to see the doctor again last week. Sadly, there is a change Ben will need skin grafts on his hand. More decisions will be made this week regarding the possibility of this procedure.

We are praying the doctors will make the right decision. We also pray that Ben's adventurous attitude will not get him in trouble any more than it has!

Getting Involved!

These are pictures of Michelle and my dad (aka the famous "Papa") two weeks ago when they attended the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Fundraiser called The Breath of Life Gala in downtown Chicago. It was a great experience for both Michelle and my dad to witness the passion they have to find a cure. Four months ago Ben was diagnosis with cystic fibrosis, and already we are beginning to get involved with the foundation to raise money for the cure!

A Little Accident

Today Ben had a little accident involving his fingers and a treadmill which resulted in a three sliced fingers and a trip the emergency room. Ben was playing in the basement while my mom was running and before she knew it, mischievous little Ben had his fingers stuck in the belt part of the treadmill. My mom immediately stopped the machine, pulled his fingers out, and began assessing his condition. After a half an hour we decided to take him to the emergency room because he seemed to be in a lot of pain. At first when we told him he was going to the hospital, he said "No more poke, poke." We kind of chuckled and said he didn't have to worry about that! At the hospital we were in and out with antibiotic medication, pain killers, and advice for a follow up visit to check his condition. He was a pro at the hospital though and did very well! Guess it's just another thing to add to the list!

We just have to keep praying. I'm sure there are many more surprised to come and we have to trust God with every minute!

Ben wakes up by 6am each morning and is quickly followed by Caleb. Either Paul or Michelle take them two downstairs for "vest and mask" time (Chest Therapy and Pulmozyme Nebulizer treatment). Ben wants to watch "Oh no You never let go," which is a DVD of Christian songs from Grandma Ferguson (Lannie). Ben has been watching this video 3 times a day for the past 2 weeks. Slightly obsessive? I think so! But it's a good obsession and the whole family enjoys it! Ben's favorite part of the song is, "Through the calm and through the storm. Oh no, you never let go. Lord, you never let go of me." (When I go home this weekend, I'll get a video of it.) What an amazing lesson for Ben to learn at a young age. We are so thankful that Ben is filling his soul with God's truth. Please continue to pray for health for Ben's body as well as salvation for his soul.

Ben seems to be doing well. Michelle and Paul are still continuing to do his vest treatments 3 times a day (which is increased from twice a day) and are closely watching him as he still has an increase of mucus. Michelle said she thinks it was less yesterday but they are still going to see how it is today and then talk with the Nurse Practitioner on Monday. If his mucus has not decreased, then they will take him to see Dr. Chung on Tuesday to make sure nothing more is going on. Ben doesn't seem to have anyother symptoms of lung infection, so we think it is just taking him a while to get over this cold. Michelle also said she never expected him to struggle through a cold so much now that we have ways to help him. But through it all we are reminded how important it is to protect Ben from exposure to illnesses and most importantly to bathe him in prayer. We are SO grateful for your prayers. James 5:16 says, "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

Last weekend my dad and Michelle went to a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Fundraiser called the Breath of Life Gala. They gave me a full report, stating it was a very nice evening at the Ritz Carlton in Chicago. They met some wonderful people from the CFF as well as the Foundation's President Robert Beall. Dr. Beall spoke about the great strides in the care and life of CF patients. He shared the exciting advances that have been made and are in the process of being made. These include protein repair drugs that would address the root problem of CF. It was exciting for my dad and Michelle to hear about all the work the CFF is doing for the impovement of CF patient's lives and the extremely confidence that a cure is in grasp.

WOW! How cool to think about the possibilities God has in store for Ben! He could be one of the first to experience these life saving strides for a cure of cystic fibrosis!

Ben is getting better ... but still has a cough and extra mucous. His appetite has increased, he has been sleeping better at night, and his energy level has increased. Michelle said he still gets short of breath when he runs around while playing, but it isn't has bad as it was the last couple of weeks. Yay! Such a relief to know he is getting better!

Ben seems to be taking a turn for the better. He went to bed really early last night and felt rested when he woke. He still has excess mucus and is coughing throughout the day. His energy level is not back to normal and he is breathing harder than normal after activity. The Pulmonary Nurse Practitioner Michelle and Paul consulted with thinks Ben probably has a viral infection and with CF it takes longer for the body to heal. The antibiotics should protect Ben from bacteria infection. Please pray for quality and quantity of sleep for Ben, healing of this infection and protection for other illness. We deeply value your prayers.

Persistent Cough

Along with Ben's cold, he has a relentless cough and is having some digestive problems. He is showing many of the same signs from his episode this summer. Michelle and Paul are very concerned about his condition. It's a learning process as they deal with Ben's health because we are so new to his disease that it's hard to know exactly when to take appropriate measures. If things do not start to get better tomorrow, Ben will be visiting the CF clinic again! We will keep you posted with his health! Please pray for our little guy!

Extra precaution!

Ben's cold has not improved and there is a risk unwanted bacteria will grow with the extra mucous in his lungs. To prevent this from occurring, Ben was given antibiotics today for the next two weeks.

Michelle and Paul are continuing to seek guidance for the best way to care for Ben and his newly diagnosed disease. There are so many gray areas they have to consider about Ben's health. We pray for wisdom as Michelle and Paul care for their two year old little boy who loves to be active and to know when to protect him. There is a balance between living a normal toddler life and being smart about his condition.

Despite our fears and concerns about Ben's life ... we must be reminded the real reason we have every breath to be thankful for. We have one goal. We have one purpose. To live with Jesus Christ eternally! It is easy to get caught up in every little detail of life, being concerned about every cough, cold, or chance that Ben will grow bacteria in his lungs ... but ultimately we must focus on the big picture!

Every Cold Is A Fight

Caleb got a cold last week. When Michelle and Paul went to Ben's CF visit they talked with Dr. Chung about ways to help Ben through a cold. She does some homeopathic treatments (using natural substances) for those that want to try alternative medicine, which is one of the huge reason Michelle and Paul wanted her as their doctor. She also told them to give Ben oscillococcinum 3 times a day when he shows signs of a cold or the flu. This medication is homeopathic and relieves influenza-like symptoms. Last week they gave it to Ben as he was showing signs of a cold. They were hoping it would lessen his symptoms and strengthen his body to fight the cold. So far Ben is mildly congested with some clear drainage and seems to be improving over the weekend. Michelle and Paul are increasing his vest treatments to 3 or 4 times a today.

Please pray for Ben's immune system to fight this virus off quickly and protection from all the bacteria who would love to live in the excess mucus of Ben's lungs. We are doing what we can to help Ben, but we trust in our great God and know that He alone is the great Healer.

2nd CF Clinic Visit

Ben visited the CF clinic Friday, September 12th for a 3 hour appointment. The doctors were very thorough while assessing Ben, shared new laboratory results, and spent a big portion of the time informing Michelle and Paul about additional ways to care for Ben. It began with the nurse as she measured how much Ben had grown. He had gained another 2 pounds and grew taller as well. He is now is the 29.7% for weight and height. They still consider Ben's nutritional status to be at-risk until he is over 50%, but they won't look at that seriously until he has been on enzymes for another 6 months. Michelle and Paul are diligently giving Ben healthy fats, protein, and lots of calories. Then they met with the nurse practitioner, Peggy Garvey, and she asked many questions about how Ben is doing and the treatments. She also did a throat swab for a bacteria culture test. We will know the results of that in 3-4 days. Doctor Chung was next as she listened to Ben's lungs and said he sounded great. She also gave us back the genetic test results. The tests indicate the homozygous presence of a known mutation of deltaF508 and its pair deltaF508. It is the most common mutation in North America with about 50% of CF patients who have this homozygous mutation. It is typically characterized by pancreatic insufficiency and having lung infections. The main concern with these results is acquiring pseudomonas organisms in their throat cultures. The big deal with this genetic mutation is that it is harder to kill this bacteria. Doctor Chung stressed to us the importance of his daily treatments, exercise, and good nutrition more so than anything else... And we know most importantly PRAYER!

Next we saw the respiratory therapist. Michelle had some questions concerning the cleaning and sterilizing of Ben's neubulizer and inhaler. There is so much to learn as Michelle and Paul pursue the most efficient ways to care for Ben. Lastly they met with the dietitian which was the easiest part of the visit because Michelle and Paul have been persistent with Ben's diet. There is definitely no problem in this particular area for Ben. He is getting organic food, rich in every nutrient he will need to thrive!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for those reading this and who are PRAYING for Ben. We are extremely grateful for those lifting Ben and our family up to the throne of our Lord God! Please don't stop praying! We don't know what the journey ahead of us holds... but we know whose hands hold them!

Jesus Heals Many

Matthew 8:14-17 - When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."

Jesus Calms the Storm

Matthew 8:23-27 - Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Ben's life has taught me to be thankful for every breath. Ben's life has taught us to look up. We are not called to be comfortable in this world... we are called to trust that Jesus heals the sick and trust that Jesus will calm our storm.

New Shoes!

Ben is doing great! Both Ty and Ben got new gym shoes, and like his father they are obsessed with their new purchase! We 100% thank the Lord for Ben's improvement and pray that his life will continue to bring glory to Jesus' name!

Heavy Load!

This picture shows Ben eating a donut for his high calorie, high fat diet! I was home for the weekend and was very surprised when I picked up Ben because I could easily tell he has gained weight. This is a huge blessing and answer to prayer!

Team Treatments

Besides having the vest treatment twice a day, Ben receives a medicine called pulmozyme via a neublizer once a day. It is an awesome drug that thins the mucus in Ben's lungs, thus helping to eliminate conditions in Ben's lungs that the bad bacteria like. Here are some pictures of Ben with his fish mask on. Ben's normal routine is to do the albuterol inhaler then vest then pulmozyme in the morning and then the albuterol inhaler and vest right before bed. The vest has a preset timer for 15 minutes. You can adjust the frequency and the amount of pressure depending on his age. The pulmozyme neublizer treatment takes about 15 minutes.
Michelle took Ben to see his Primary Care Physician last week and Ben gained a pound and grew a 1/4 inch in two weeks. Praise the Lord! The enzymes are working and we are on our way to getting Ben to a good weight and height. The doctors want him to be in the 50% for both. Paul and Michelle are trying to feed Ben as high fat, calorie and protein diet as possible. He eats a lot of nuts, wholesome fatty beef, heavy multigrain breads, eggs with spinach and coconut oil, veggies with butter. . . actually everything he eats gets added butter or olive oil! Please pray Ben will be able to gain and maintain the weight he needs. Praise God for his continued health!

Some days Ben will cooperate during his treatment and others Michelle and Paul have to fight Ben to do his routine. The whole family has to be flexible during Ben's treatment. Ty has done an especially good job of being patient and considerate during Ben's treatments.

Dr. Appointment

Ben went to a doctor appointment last week to receive his immunization shots and had an allergic reaction on his leg. Michelle took him back to the doctor and they said the reaction was not something to stress about. Other than the reaction, the doctors were very encouraged about Ben's health. He has continued to gain weight which is a huge blessing! God continues to work through Ben's life! Paul and Michelle are so thankful for everyone who is praying for Ben's health. Through the power of prayer, Ben's health continues to progress!

Travel Home

Paul, Michelle, Ty, Ben, and Caleb are traveling late tonight on a flight back to Chicago from their 6 day stay in New Hampshire. They had a wonderful trip while spending quality time with the Ferguson family. Paul and Michelle planned to go to New Hampshire during the 2 week period Ben was in the hospital, so they made arrangements to take their trip later in the summer. Please pray that the family will travel safe and the kids will not lose it at any point of the trip (which is hard to do!).

Paul, Michelle, Ty, Ben and Caleb had a great time visiting Poppy and Lannie in New Hampshire. Michelle said that Ben had a lot of fun helping Poppy drive his boat, watching Lanny's puppet shows, playing with cousins Cole, Olive and Claire, and being amazed by Uncle Will's baseball moon-shots. They played a lot of baseball, went frog hunting (but returned unsuccessful because Ben and Lanny got stung by bees), looked at the boats coming into Wolfboro's harbor, and visited the famous ice cream stop Bailey's Bubble. Meghan, Cole and Olive drove from Boston to see them, which was a highlight for Ty and Ben. They went to a nature center/wildlife zoo that had deers, bobcat, mountain lions, bears, bald eagles, foxes, and hawks to look at and learn about. Will, Kim and baby Siena made the 6 hour trip from New York City to see them for the weekend. They really enjoyed meeting Siena for the first time and playing with Will and Kim. Aunt Kris, Uncle Steven, Claire and baby Haven arrived from Boston on Friday as well. Ty, Ben, and Claire ran around the house chasing each other, played with "blue guy", and had fun making smores together. It was a blessing to spend time with family and they had a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Another Vacation

The whole Ferguson family piled in the car this morning at 5 am to fly to New Hampshire to visit Paul's extended family. Even for a six day trip, they have so much stuff to pack with all of Ben's treatment equipment. We pray they will be safe, the kids will cooperate while they travel, and that Ben will not get any illness from the congested air on the plane.

My Personal Twist

Today I feel burdened about Ben's disease and what the future holds for his precious life. I have been following another blog called "Confessions Of A CF Husband" since last school year when my teacher shared their story. The author's wife has CF, unexpectedly got pregnant, had a double lung transplant around the same time of the birth of her daughter, and recently has been diagnosed with Post-Transplant Lymphoma (a serious type of cancer). This Christian couple has shown great faith through their journey and hardships...and it has been a true encouragement in my life since Ben has been diagnosed.

Lamentations 3: 22-25 - Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him." The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.

As I plan to leave for school at the end of the week, I have made arrangements with Michelle to send me pictures and updates regularly so you will continue to be updated with Ben's health, prayer requests, and most importantly how God is working through his disease. As I prepare to be 300 miles away from my little guy, I have reflected a lot on what has happened this summer, which is why today's blog is more personal rather than strictly focusing on Ben's health. I listened again to Ben singing "Step by Step" and cried when I heard his sweet voice sing the words, "Oh God, you are my God. And I will ever praise you. I will seek you in the morning. And will learn to walk in your ways. And step by step You'll lead me. And I will FOLLOW YOU ALL OF MY DAYS."

From the bottom of my heart I hope and PRAY that one day these will not just be words to Ben, but they will become his life. This summer, Ben's life has completely changed me. I have been searching and I have been stretched through witnessing Ben's diagnosis and struggles. At the end of the summer ... I come to realize I'm at the same place at where I started. I'm still the same broken, lost soul who is longing for someone, something, anything to save me. And through the times when I felt like I was in an empty room streaming and no one could hear me ... there was someone who closed my mouth, held me in His arms, and brought peace, hope, and joy back into my life. It was God, My Savior, Jesus Christ who comforted me and our whole family and who saved us from despair. If you do not believe in Him today ... don't miss the signs. Let Ben's life be the sign that life is too precious and too easy to miss the true meaning and the true reason we take every breath. Jesus Christ is the reason and we are in desperate need of his faithfulness!

Doctors Appointment

Ben's doctor appointment was over 2 hours because the whole CF team checked on Ben and answered any questions Michelle and Paul had. Overall, the doctors said Ben has continued to gain weight so they increased the amount of enzymes he takes before his meals and snacks. Also, Ben got an inhaler for his albuterol medication instead of a nebulizer treatment. This is a huge relief for Michelle and Paul because it takes 10 minutes out of his treatment time and makes life much easier since Ben fought it each time. Ben now only has one nebulizer, pulmonzyme. According to the charts, Ben is within 8% in weight for his age group. He is considered at risk for weight and if he continues to remain at these levels he will require a feeding tube. The doctors are not too concerned since Ben was just diagnosed. They want him to be within 50% for his weight within the next 6-12 months. It is so important that Ben increases his weight because his lungs will function at a higher level.

What Ben Still Has Ahead

There are many important appointments approaching Michelle and Paul which will give them more and more answers about Ben's health and condition. Friday morning Ben has a follow-up doctors appointment at the CF clinic in Westchester. We are looking forward to this appointment to see what the doctors have to say about Ben's health after being released out of the hospital for 2 weeks. Also, we are waiting on the results for his genetic test which will come in the next couple of weeks. This test will analyze the severity of his disease and will be able to tell what specific genes are effected. The genetic carrier test detects if the patient carriers one or more mutation of the CF gene and how many copies of each mutation.

Today Ben was running around, chasing Ty and cousin Luke as Michelle noticed that Ben has a hard time keeping up with them. This is mostly because Ben is a year behind them, but also Ben seems to get tired more easily. Ty and Luke were racing down a hill toward the beach as Ben quickly followed, hating to be left behind. Ben could only make it down the hill and then stopped. Michelle had to walk down to bring him back up.

The thing that worries Michelle and Paul the most about Ben's disease is the unknowns about what the future holds. Ben could very well thrive and live a healthier life than any one without CF. On the other hand, Ben may be the young teenager who is always behind in sports and has difficulty keeping up with his peers. Michelle and Paul have learned quickly that they have no other choice than to take one day at a time, trusting fully in God's plan for Ben's life. We pray that Ben will be free of any dangerous bacteria, that he will take full ownership of his disease, and that he will trust God with his future.

Philippians 3:7-8 - But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.

The Battle

Ben's treatment involves the whole family. To keep Ben entertained and occupied during this routine, everyone helps by reading books, singing songs, playing with blocks or motorcylces, or anything else that seems to get his mind off it.

Other than the struggles for Ben's therapy, he is a wild man around the house. Every member of our family has commented on how funny Ben is. He always bring a smile to everyone's face!

Ben is enjoying the week on the lake! He went on the tube today with Michelle, Hailey, and I and Luke and Ty on the one next to us. He loves to go fishing off our dock, but he doesn't like to take turns with his brother and cousins! He is definitely one of the loudest kids at the house, waking up anyone who is sleeping.

Today I walked into the house and heard Aunt Krista nicely asking Ben not to take the trains from cousin Jackson. I turned to Ben and simply asked, "Ben are you sharing with baby Jack?" He said to me, "Ummmmmmm........." (as if he knows he isn't, but doesn't actually want to admit his behavior). Krista laughed at his response as most people do when Ben is in trouble. So I had to give him the whole sharing talk and be nice to everyone. Then I asked Ben to give Jack a hug and say he is sorry ... with his head down and lips smirked it took a long time for him to actually say it. I told him he can't be prideful and have a boy ego at the age 2 and not be able to say he is sorry for his actions. He didn't understand...but at least he started to share the trains with Jackson after that!

Ben brings energy and a unique dimension to our family. We are very thankful for his life!

Eye Witness

For the next week our family gets the chance to witness Ben's treatment first hand. We learned quickly it's not comfortable for Ben and is a painful site to watch. From the vest, Ben's whole body shakes and when he tries to talk he sounds like he is on a roller coaster ride. Reality is sinking in ... Ben has to make big sacrifices to maintain his health. When Ben's cousins are already playing with trains and running around doing normal childish things, he has to sit for 20-30 minutes for his treatment twice a day. When he is older the situation remains the same. He will have to wake up extra early before sports games, school, and when he has sleepovers with friends, he will have to take time out for his treatment.

Ben's cold is getting better! There is no doubt he is healing fast because of the POWER OF PRAYER! He has never fought a cold this fast, even before his diagnosis. In the past, Ben's colds would last for weeks. We are thankful and encouraged through God's goodness! On the other hand, Uncle Time, Aunt Krista, and cousin Jack are all sick. Living together for one week in a spacious lake house is a special time for our family but nerve recking that germs will be spread. We have become Nazis about washing our hands, the number one prevention.

We believe in a POWERFUL, AMAZING, LOVING God ... he will take care of Ben! Psalm 34:8 - Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Ben Is Official

For the next week Ben will be enjoying the Bollier family vacation on Lake James in Indiana. With 9 adults and 6 kids under 4 years old Ben will have plenty of activity! Even though we are excited about our time together, it's always a concern for Ben's health when he is around a big group of people for a long period of time.

Ben's cold doesn't seem that bad. His nose is running a little but is not that stuffed up and is not coughing. Please continue to pray that his immune system fights this off and he doesn't catch any other sickness.

Ben received a special gift in the mail from Uncle Will, Aunt Kim, and Cousin Siena. Of course Ben is obsessed and really wanted to do his pulmozyme nebulizer treatment on the motorcycle.

Sick again?

Ben has a cold. Yes...really! Obviously his immune system has been down, so he caught something within the first week of being out of the hospital. He has continually been on antibiotics which really has an effect on his body's response to common colds anyone could fight off. For Ben's whole life he has been sick. The first 2 weeks of his life we realized he was not absorbing breast milk and we thought he was "allergic" to it. For the remaining of his lifetime he seemed to always have some sort of cold, runny nose, and congestion. It's interesting that now we freak out about a cold, even though during his whole life it didn't seem as big of a deal. But now we know Ben has cystic fibrosis, it will always be a concern when he gets sick.

Psalm 33:18-22 - But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.

Trouble!

After everything that has happened, it's easy to see that Ben is still Ben ... always taking things from his brothers, always on the go, always knowing what he wants and when he wants it, and always up to something he's not suppose to do ... and cystic fibrosis has not stopped him from getting back to the normal 2 year old behaviors. Even though Ben seems to always be getting into same kind of trouble, he has such a sweet heart behind all his energy and excitement. Great-grandpa Bollier was at our house for a couple of weeks and it was so cute to see Ben walk over to his chair and give him a big hug when no one else was around him!

Ben may seem to be back to his normal lifestyle (besides his treatments and pancreatic enzymes), but it's Michelle and Paul who carry the heavy load of caring for Ben's disease at this point in his life. Michelle and Paul are learning the balance between take precautions to avoid Ben from catching any sickness and also allowing him to live out his life to the fullest. For Ben's remaining lifetime, there is a continuous prayer request that he does not get the serious bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. About 60% of people with cystic fibrosis get respiratory infections because of this bacterial. Pseudomonas settles in the thick mucous trapped in his lungs which is very hard to get rid of. Respiratory failure from these infections is what ultimately kills CF patients.

BUT ... We believe in a POWERFUL God! We pray that Ben will be free of this bacterial!

Since he has been home from the hospital, he has been riding his bike all over town! Before he was diagnosed, he didn't seem too interested in his bike, but now he just wants to take off!

Proverbs 21:30 - There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.

Isaiah 25:1 and 9 - O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago. Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.

Treatment

Ben is trying to get into the routine for his treatment every morning and night which takes around 45 minutes. Michelle said it is amusing to watch Ben during this process because he is strapped down to his nebulizer and his chest vibrating vigorously with the vest. Michelle and Paul are thankful for the vest because Ben is holding still for it better than their manual CPT.

Romans 8: 31-32 - If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his won Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Benny's Improvement

Before Ben was diagnosed with CF and began treatment, he never slept through the night and always woke up around 5am. For the past 2 years Michelle and Paul have been experiencing Ben's inconvenient sleeping schedule. Just last night Ben slept until 7:30 am. We may have experienced the emotional disappointment to hear Ben has CF, but Ben's health has never been doing better from his treatment. It is so interesting to me that he never slept deep enough or long enough because his lungs were filled with fluid and he could not get enough oxygen. Also, Ben coughs a little when he wakes up, but it is not as bad as it was. Krista, Ben's Aunt, noticed he is not breathing as deep or heavy as he has his whole life. We are very encouraged and excited to continue to see how God heals his little body! There is only one person we can thank for his improvement, Jesus Christ! Thank you Lord!

Uncle Tim and Aunt Krista made a special welcoming sign for Ben when he arrived. Since Ben has been home his new vest arrived. Ben tried it this morning and it is a good option for CPT (chest physical therapy) because Ben can still use his arms. With the "pat pats" Ben has to sit still longer (which for a 2 year old is not possible!) but with the vest he can play with toys at the same time. Ben's little body is still adjusting to CF treatment such as the pancreatic enzymes. He has a very sore rash on his bottom which is either from the enzymes or the antibiotics. Ben is on oral antibiotics to continue his treatment from the hospital. Ben loves being home, but his body has gone through so much these past weeks that he is still worn out and is not 100%.

My dad and I made a surprise visit to see Ben. I have never seen a little kid so passionate about motorcycles! When we drove past the house Ben was standing outside and started to wave both arms frantically. He couldn't stand it! Haha...then Papa drove right past him and I will never forget how cute Ben was. Transition

Transitioning to daily life and inviting cystic fibrosis into the Ferguson home is the biggest challenge. Ben is doing great but seems to be more tired than usual. He is enjoying every minute of being home and playing with his brothers in his usual domain.

Michelle and Paul are relieved to be home. It's about time their summer can begin! With some extra time off, Paul is available to help at home with this transition time. Ty has been such a trooper through this whole experience. It must be hard for a three year old to be away from his house and not always get the attention he wants from his parents. Michelle and Paul have done a great job balancing their time between the three boys.

Today I read about David and his response to extremely challenging obstacles in his life:
2 Samuel 22 - (v. 2-3) The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior - from violent men you save me... (v. 17-22) He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. (v. 31-34) As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.

At breakfast I was talking to one of my best friends about Ben. For the past four years she has dealt with a chronic liver disease and can relate to Ben's life on a whole other level. She said something about Ben's situation that stuck out to me. Right now in the process of Ben's disease, we are cruising along ... with every one's constant support and love ... how could we not be encouraged? But Satan HATES that God is being glorified through this tragedy and is planning his attack. The battle is yet to come ... I'm convinced of that. Please pray that Michelle, Paul, Ty, Ben, and Caleb will continue to seek God's face through any physical, spiritual, or mental battle!

Romans 8: 38-39 - For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the LOVE of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Farewell

Ben, along with the whole family, left Children's Memorial Hospital and said their last goodbyes. Hopefully this will be the last extended stay at the hospital for a LONG time! Removing the PICC line was a bit traumatic for Ben, but Michelle loved being able to tell him it was the last ouches for a while!

Praise God! It has been a long 3 weeks and we are so grateful that Ben was released from the hospital today. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from our family, friends, the Wheaton community, and believers around the world. So many of you have touched us with your words and actions. We have truly felt the love of a Christian community and we are blessed to know such amazing people. Throughout this journey we have experienced the incredible power of prayer. At times we have felt so weak yet all along a heavenly hand was there to guide us and lift us up. We know this is the hand of God powered by the prayers of people in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus has been with us each step of the way and it has been life changing to know His peace, presence and strength during such a hard time. Thank you for your prayers. They have meant so much to us. We are ready to fight this disease and to see how the Lord is going to use Cystic Fibrosis in the life of Benjamin and our family.

Last Night On 9 West

Ben's last night at Children's Memorial Hospital makes you remember the beginning of the journey God has taken us on 3 weeks ago. Scared, confused, and wrestling with so many unanswered questions was where we found ourselves while entering room 988, our new home away from home. God could not have been more real and present at Children's. The whole CF staff, from the residents, pulmonologist, nutritionist, and respiratory therapist were hand picked by God to care for Ben. Each member of the team is extremely competent in their field of study and have walked with Michelle and Paul through the good and bad. It is because of their knowledge and interventions that Ben's health is thriving. We thank the Lord for the the opportunity to build relationships with each CF member. Ben will regularly be visiting a satellite CF clinic in Westchester where the CF team will continue to care for him.

Today Michelle and Paul received all Ben's medications and are realizing the cost of it all. A huge prayer request is that Michelle and Paul will qualify for an assistance program to help with the expenses. They are also waiting on some insurance information and referrals. Please pray the referrals will come through so they are able to continue to see the doctors at Children's Memorial.

Also, please pray for Ben's transition out of Children's Hospital Wednesday afternoon. He will be getting his PICC line removed early Wednesday morning, packing up all his stuff, and heading out the door around noon. The whole family is going to spend some time at the beach in Chicago and then head home. Ben has not been outside of a hospital in 3 weeks, so this is huge for the little 2 year old!

Many of the doctors and nurses have already expressed that they will miss little Ben! ... In a weird way, I think Ben will miss them too! They have become a part of the family!

It's any mother's nightmare to find out your child has a chronic disease. Michelle has been unbelievably strong through the ups and downs. It's through God's strength that she is able to face each day, knowing God has complete control of her son!

Ben is a Celebrity at Children's

Today was a busy day at Children's Memorial Hospital, especially after the weekend. Michelle and Paul talked to the Doctors about CF clinic visits which start in 3 weeks. They are starting to get things ready to leave on Wednesday which includes filling prescriptions for Ben's medicines, setting up the follow up appointments, and making sure they know the techniques for Ben's treatment. It has been an extremely long, exhausting, emotional draining 3 weeks and the whole family is ready to get home!

Today Ben was sprinting up and down the halls of the hospital for 45 minutes without a shortness of breath! He is the healthiest sick person in the hospital! PRAISE THE LORD!

After two weeks of being in the hospital, Ben has developed a reputation at Children's. He is known for being the fun, (mostly) happy (besides some treatments and IV antibiotics), cute, love-able, energetic, mischievous, and is known to put a smile on any face who comes into his room! Michelle said she called down to the cafeteria to order Ben food and the woman on the other side of the phone randomly said she just loves Ben and thinks he is so cute. Each nurse LOVES taking care of Ben and probably fights over who gets him each shift (common...who wouldn't?!). He's a special little guy who is unlike any other 2 year old little boy!

All Because of God

After two weeks of being in the hospital, we can visually see the effects of the "tune-up" period. The Doctors said Ben couldn't be doing better! PRAISE THE LORD! Ben's health has never been better. His profuse cough seems to have disappeared, especially in the morning when it was the worst. He is slowly gaining weight. His lungs sound clear. But we still will be monitoring his breathing after extensive activity. One day after he was running around, as a normal 2 year old would do, he was wheezing and seemed to be breathing heavy. The Doctors said that should go away over time but to continue to watch him.

Today at Wheaton Bible Church, my pastor made a point that God uses disappointments to grow us. He also encouraged us to react and respond to obstacles in faith. This is so true! Michelle and Paul have faced a huge trial in their life, but God is using this situation to strengthen them! This diagnosis of cystic fibrosis is not about Benjamin Ferguson, it's about God and how he is going to use this situation to draw us closer to his loving arms.

It is only because of prayer and God's power that we are encouraged Ben is doing so well!

Prayer requests:
-Ben will not return to the hospital ANY time soon and his health will continue to stabilize
-For the whole family to adjust to their normal routines as they return home this Wednesday
-Ben will continued to be free from bacteria which will cause infection in his lungs
-For Michelle and Paul to balance Ben's activity, social life, and protecting his health

Someone Put A Leash On Him!

It's exciting to say that Ben is back to his normal, crazy, energetic self! Despite the inconveniences during the day with his continued antibiotic medications, respiratory therapy, and pancreatic enzymes he has to take every time before he eats - he is the same old Ben we knew before his diagnosis! Besides his constant energy, we know that Ben is back when he will tell you blatantly what he wants, screaming "NO!" if he doesn't agree. But somehow his cute smile lets him get away with his behavior. And if you try to discipline him, he puts that silly smirk on and you can't help but just laugh at him...defeating the whole purpose.

By the third week of being in the hospital he is a great helper to all the nurses! He assists the them while taking vital signs, and his new thing is to play with the stethoscope. Michelle told me he was starting to fight his treatment, but I know she was lying because when I was in the room he was awesome! He held the nebulizer to his face all by himself and tolerated the "pat pats" (CPT - chest physical therapy) scoring an A+. The whole family is anxious to get Ben home as the CF staff at Children's prepare for Ben's release on Wednesday. Thank the Lord for blessing Ben's life!

Psalm 145: 13-16 - The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

Ben's Big Day

Today was a big day for the whole Ferguson family. Ty and Caleb were tested for cystic fibrosis, and THANK THE GOOD LORD for their negative results! Also, the Doctors told Michelle and Paul they will for sure leave next Tuesday or Wednesday. They want to make sure they finish his IV antibiotic medications and continue Michelle and Paul's learning on the appropriate care for Ben's nutrition needs and CPT (chest physical therapy).

For the past week Ben has been constantly talking about "Papa" riding his motorcycle to the hospital so Ben can see it from the window. Today was Ben's lucky day because "Papa" rode his bike down to the city, which put the BIGGEST smile on his face.

The Fight Against Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis was foreign to most of our non-medical family members but 11 days ago it became a part of our life. Personally, God had a unique way of preparing my life for Ben's disease. During one of my clinicals in Indianapolis I cared for a CF patient. Early in Ben's hospitalization I was nervous that he might have CF because his condition pointed to all the signs that this patient I cared for experienced. When I told my mom, she quickly denied that was what Ben had. I mean common...it's a genetic disorder. No one is our family seems to ever be sick. It couldn't be us! ...Right?!

Isn't it amazing to think about God's plan for our lives? If you talked to me a a month ago, it never came close to crossing my mind that my little nephew has a deadly disease. So many people may ask "WHY?" But today I was thinking...and I think I know why... Within the past 2 weeks of Ben being in the hospital my family has never been closer (and who would have thought we weren't close enough?!). Within the past 2 weeks we have been on our knees searching for God. This must be the reason for Ben's diagnosis...we are completely depended on God. If life was comfortable and easy all the time...we would never turn to God.

I've learned through past experiences and this present trial that it's guaranteed that we will face hard times in our life. 1 Peter 1:6-7 - In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Ben's diagnosis of cystic fibrosis is just the beginning of a long journey ahead of us. God knows exactly what he is doing...and I find it amazing that Ben is the one with CF because his personality and character will easily conqueror this chronic disease. One thing I pray for little Ben is as he grows and matures into a young man, this disease will not define who he is. I pray that cystic fibrosis will be a tool for Benjamin to draw closer to the Lord but will not let it run his life. I pray for Ben's salvation and that he will one day fall completely head-over-heels in love with God!

May Ben's testimony prove to you that life is short. Give yourself to God! He doesn't guarantee it will be easy, but he does promise to carry you through every step of life!

Currently, Ben has continued to find strength. He fights his IV antibiotic treatments and respiratory treatments sometimes, but we pray that he will get used to the procedures as they will become a life style for Ben. Michelle and Paul are absolutely exhausted. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson returned home this afternoon as Michelle and Paul begin to juggle their 3 children without much outside help these next couple of days. Michelle sounded EXHAUSTED on the phone today, and earlier this week my dad made a comment that he has never seen Michelle so tired. We may be encouraged through our faith, but we are also challenged as we continue to face this disease full force.

As we prepare for this long fight against cystic fibrosis, our family is already making big plans to raise money, support, and awareness for CF. Like Michelle said, the cystic fibrosis foundation doesn't know what is going to hit them! Over the course of the next year I will be planning a tennis tournament to raise money for research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. At the same time, my dad wants to organize a Harley rally to "Ride for CF." We will not let cystic fibrosis have the power over our lives, we will fight the battle against CF!

Brotherhood

The Ferguson family is setting a new trend!! I couldn't help but thoroughly enjoy this family picture. Ben has to wear a mask when he adventures out of the 9 west wing of the hospital and everyone else joins in! According to Michelle, Ben and Ty run laps around the courtyard of the hospital. Ty told Michelle that Ben is his friend and he has really missed him. Precious! Michelle and Paul talked to the nutritionist today for 2-3 hours and will be trained the appropriate CPT (chest physical therapy) technique so they will incorporate these routines into their daily life. So this next week will involve intense teaching for the whole family to care for Ben when he goes home. There is no doubt Ben is doing as well as he is because of the prayer support from people not just in our country but around the world! The power of prayer is tangible and even Michelle said she can feel all the prayers through their indescribable peace and strength! Ben has taken huge "steps forward" and we can contribute it to prayer and God's faithfulness in our lives.

A huge praise is that the doctors did not find any serious bacteria growing in his lungs...he does have one that will easily be treated with the antibiotics he has been on for the past week.

Also, whenever the nurses come to care for Ben in any way (even when he freaks out with the antibiotics because he hates when anyone touches his PICC line) we have taught Ben to say "Thank you Nurse." Or maybe this is something important I have taught him...because we must respect those amazing nurses (because I will be one someday)!

Steps Forward

Yay! Ben is out of isolation and got the chance to go outside today for the first time in 1 1/2 week. For anyone who knows Ben, that's huge! He LOVES to be outside! He played in the courtyard of the hospital with Ty as he marched around mimicking everything Ty did...guess nothing changes!

And some prayer requests as we look forward...

1. Please pray the damage done to Ben's lungs would be minimized and improved through God's healing and his treatments.
2. The enzymes he just started taking would allow him to absorb the nutrients he needs.
3. Please pray the Lord Jesus would protect Ben from lung infection and sickness. There are certain bacterial infections that CF patients can get in their lungs that are harder to treat, so we pray against those as well.
4. Pray that the whole family will be able to adjust back to their normal routines when returning home from the hospital.

Ants In His Pants

Ben is so funny. He loves to look out the window and wait for a motorcycle to drive-by. (I wasn't kidding about his obsession) Then he will scream "Megan, motorcycle, motorcycle." He is starting to go crazy being stuck in his room and especially since he is feeling more and more life himself. But it is so important that he continues to heal and get the attention he is getting. From an X-ray his lungs show some damaged. To what degree, I don't know...but all we know is it is very important we continue to do what we are doing now so there is no further damage. But may we see God's blessing today:

1 Corinthians 2: 9 - No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

Our whole family can testify that in a matter of moments, your life can turn upside down ... but today as you look at Ben's situation, may you be inspired to remember God has a plan for every one! Everyday we wake up, we are all the same no matter your situation ... we are all broken, lost, lonely, and in desperate need of a God who has the power to HEAL the emptiness in our hearts!

More Challenges To Face

The Doctor informed us Ben will possibly be staying in the hospital longer than two weeks (visitors always welcome!). So basically, we need to get really comfortable! This news is obviously good and bad. Good - Over the next couple of weeks the CF staff will monitor his digestive and respiratory system very closely and he will continue to get the attention he needs. Ben has already gained 2 pounds since he has been at Children's. The pancreatic enzymes seem to help absorb his nutrients but at the same time he has been a little irritable. I personally think his stomach is a little upset, trying to adjust to the enzymes he has never had. Also, he receives respiratory therapy four times a day which consists of nebulizer treatment and CPT (chest physical therapy). He loves CPT as it helps relax him because it's basically a nice back massage. The benefits of CPT is to break up all the mucous and drainage that sticks to the walls of his lungs. Bad - Ben will remain in isolation and Paul and Michelle will continue to live out of their suitcase. Another "little miracle within the storm" is how God has provided a place for Paul and Michelle to call "home." For the past four days, a generous Alumni from Wheaton Academy has allowed the family to stay at his condo 10 minutes from the hospital. It is located right along the lakeshore, two block from Michigan Ave (which is dangerous, especially for me!), and in the heart of the city. Currently, for the next week Paul and Michelle are relocating to Nate Frank's apartment in Wrigleyville! (Cubs game anyone?!?!?!) God knows how to take care of our needs! Meanwhile, it continues to be a struggle with balancing time with Ty, Ben, and Caleb. Michelle is still nursing Caleb and has to travel back and forth on a regular basis ... she is in high demand!

It has been a 1 1/2 week in the hospital, and now the full affects are kicking in ... it's been draining, exhausting, and a test of faith.

A close friend gave me this verse: Nahum 1:7 - The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.

We may be tired and weary ... buts we TRUST in a God who has NO LIMITS. He is the provider, the caregiver, the Doctor, the healer, the comforter, the support, the helping hand, a friend, a Father, the reason we breath ... he is EVERYTHING we need.

The Little Miracles Within The Storm

July 4th weekend...

Ben was ecstatic to watch the fireworks from the window of his hospital room, especially after the hard day he faced. In the morning, the PICC line was inserted in his right bicep and was very sore through out the day. Later in the day Ben was given the official sweat chloride test to announce his diagnosis. For this particular test, a score below 40 is a negative CF test and a score above 60 is a confirmed positive test for CF. Sadly, the Doctor informed us his test score was 100. Hearing this new information stung pretty bad. The diagnosis is official...

Nonetheless, there are countless little miracles within this storm (here are just a few)...

Number 1: God's plan for our family to show others his love, power, and divine plan for our lives

While talking on the phone with my Uncle Phil, he reminded me that God LOVES Ben more than we EVER will. And the fact that God is hurting just as much as we are to watch little Ben go through this sickness. If God loves Ben THAT much, there MUST be a perfect reason why Ben has cystic fibrosis! I am convinced that God's reason for this, out weights the negative. I don't know how many people actually read all this blog...but maybe just that reason is for YOU. Maybe you are the person that needs to look at the pictures of Ben, and be encouraged. Encouraged through our faith and hope in Christ that He WILL carry us through this obstacle... and that no matter what you are facing today, we have a Savior who will pick us up every time we fall!

Psalm 107:13-16 - Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

Number 2: Ben's progression within one week

Number 3: Support for Paul and Michelle's family

Letters, phone calls, emails, places to stay, meals, packages, text messages, visits ... the support from family, friends, the community, and even strangers has been overwhelming! I will speak for Paul and Michelle and just say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Nothing goes unnoticed!

Grandpa Bollier ("Papa") has been dedicated to helping in any way he can! ...mostly by what he does best, spending time with the little guys!

Nurse Grandma Bollier has been next to Ben's side the whole time, making sure the BEST Doctors and Nurses are taking care of Ben!

And of course...Grandpa and Grandma Ferguson flew all the way from New Hampshire as they sacrifice their time to help the family with any needs.

And for me...a little miracle I see in the whole situation is the fact that God closed the door for me to live in Michigan this summer. I always knew there was a reason God wanted me to live at home, and this is the reason...to help one of my little obsessions, nephew Ben!
